Shanghai has become the port with the biggest cargo-handling capacity in the world, and the busiest port in the Chinese mainland. A total of 19.78 million containers were filled and shipped from Shanghai in the last 11 months, a 19.7% growth compared with the same period last year.

After the combination of the first and second basins, Yangshan Deep-water port has extended its shoreline from 1,900 m to 3,000 m. Currently, the port is equipped with 9 deep-water berths of 1.4 million sq m and 34 cranes, including 13 double-40-feet cranes. The port has become a perfect supplement to the Yangtze River mouth, where the water is not deep enough to hold large container vessels. Shanghai is confident in making Yangshan a modern big port in the future to enhance its position in international shipping.

The first automatic container yard was set up in Shanghai, and started operation on last September 19. It can automatically handle 647 thousand containers currently, and its capacity will become 720 thousand two years later after the total completion of the project. By then, Shanghai will be worthy of its reputation as an international port.
